Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Hemorrhagic Radiation Cystitis

Background: Hemorrhagic radiation cystitis (HRC) is a significant clinical problem that occurs after pelvic radiation therapy and is often refractory. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) for HRC. Methods: Daily 90 minute sessions of HBO at 2 ATM 100% oxygen were given to 32 HRC patients with ASTRO grades 3-4 hematuria. Results: The …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Radiation Cystitis in Patients with Prostate Cancer: A Long-Term Follow-Up Study

Abstract Objective: To assess the safety and efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) for treating radiation cystitis a long-term fol low-up study was done in patients with prostate cancer, the second most common malignancy in Japan. Patients and Methods: A total of 38 patients at an age of 68 8 8 years with radiation cystitis following irradiation of prostate cancer were treated …

The use of the hyperbaric oxygenation therapy in urology

Abstract The basic principle of the hyperbaric oxygenation therapy (HOT) is to increase the dissolved oxygen in the blood when it is administered at high pressure. Then O2 will be distributed to the tissues through the pressure gradient, in this way obtaining an hyper-oxygenation of the tissue that has anti-inflammatory and pain-killing effects and induces augmentation of bacterial …

The efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of radiation-induced late side effects

Abstract PURPOSE: We investigated the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the management of patients with radiation-induced late side effects, the majority of whom had failed previous interventions. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Of 105 eligible subjects, 30 had either died or were not contactable, leaving 75 who qualified for inclusion in this retrospective study. Patients answered a questionnaire documenting symptom severity before …

Peno-scrotal soft tissue loss: a need for multidisciplinary and multimodal integration

Aim: Scrotal soft tissue loss is a part of the challenging conditions for plastic surgeon. The non-availability of adequate nearby healthy soft tissue and its probability of frequent contamination by excretory substances make the issue of reconstruction complicated. The authors present their experience with penoscrotal soft tissue loss with hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct. …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the Treatment of Fournier’s Gangrene: A Review of 34 Cases

ABSTRACT Introduction: Fournier’s gangrene is a serious necrotizing infection that can be fatal if not promptly attended. Treatment for this condition consists of a combination of surgical debridement, antibiotherapy and supportive care. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used as an adjuvant for the optimization of infected tissue oxygenation and for its bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects. Material …

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis resistant to conventional treatments: long-term results of a case series in Japan

Abstract BACKGROUND: There is no confirmed strategy for treating painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC) with unclear etiology. Therefore, a pilot study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in treatment-resistant PBS/IC patients. METHODS: HBO treatment (2.0 ATA for 60 minutes/day × 5 days/week for 2 or 4 weeks) was performed on 11 patients with severe symptoms that had not …

Chemical- and radiation-induced haemorrhagic cystitis: current treatments and challenges

To review the published data on predisposing risk factors for cancer treatment-induced haemorrhagic cystitis (HC) and the evidence for the different preventive and therapeutic measures that have been used in order to help clinicians optimally define and manage this potentially serious condition. Despite recognition that HC can be a significant complication of cancer treatment, there is …

Amputation of Glans Penis: A Rare Circumcision Complication and Successful Management with Primary Anastomosis and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Abstract Penile amputation is an uncommon condition that requires immediate surgical replantation. Routine standardized procedures for dealing with this medical condition do not exist. We describe a case of complete guillotine-type glans penis amputation and review the relevant literature. We performed urethral end-to-end approximation and glanular anastomosis and then applied hyperbaric oxygen therapy postoperatively. We obtained very good cosmetic and functional results.
